Children Challenging Industry

The Children Challenging Industry project enables 9-11 year old pupils to experience real-life science by visiting chemical and related companies. The project aims to:-
- Enthuse primary pupils with a love of science
- Provide class-based training for teachers in investigative science (national curriculum stage 2)
- Raise teachers’ and children’s perceptions of the chemical and related industries
CCI has run in Bradford since 2001, and expanded across the West Yorkshire area in 2003. The regional advisory teacher, Michele Smale, based at CIRCE in Castleford, manages the project.
How it works
- The advisory teacher contacts interested companies and visits the site to determine the tour topic from Water for Industry, A Pinch of Salt, Exploring Colour and Industry, Kitchen Concoctions or Plastics Playtime.
- Company personnel are trained to ensure that the tour is suitable for primary children and links to class science lessons.
- The advisory teacher visits the school and delivers 3 practical industrial-based science lessons to pupils. Training is also provided to teachers in investigative science, making school-industry links and help with the delivery of National Curriculum science.
- The class participate in the visit and pupils feedback their experiences to the advisory teacher and the company.
At present 35 schools per year participate throughout West Yorkshire and there are 13 active companies who accept site visits. The feed back from both schools and industry are very positive and feel the project is very beneficial. Here are some quotes form those who have taken part in the project this year.
"The whole experience – staff meeting and lessons for children has been very rewarding for both staff and children. Our relationship with CCI is one we want to continue and foster in the future."Heather Wood deputy head/science co-ordinator Headfield C.E. Junior School Dewsbury
