Attendees heard three excellent presentations by Peter Goss from Syngenta, Brendan Catlow from James Robinson Ltd and Julian Driver from Vickers Laboratories Ltd.
Some common themes stood out from all the activities described:
alignment of cross functional teams with the overall business goals
ensuring employees understand how their contribution adds value
the importance of recognition and reward (financial and non-financial)
In addition:
recognise that innovation is not limited to R&D alone
drive improvement through a phased and cohesive approach eg plant by plant
introduce easily understandable KPIs benchmarking against world class standards
communicate results - good and bad
commit to the long haul, not a quick fix
reliance on new plant and machinery alone will not achieve improved business performance
if a company drives manufacturing performance, cost, quality, capacity, safety and morale will all follow
