Yorkshire and Humber is home to one of the largest concentrations of chemical related activity in the UK, making up 10% of the UK total.
The region’s chemical sector has a diverse r
ange of companies within it, attracting many of the world’s industry giants, together with many independent companies, as well as a high proportion of start-ups. With 14% of all new chemical businesses based in Yorkshire; Sheffield, Leeds and York have been identified by the Royal Society of Chemistry as the UK’s major clusters of chemical science spin-outs.
Over 450 chemical companies are located in the region, with over 400 chemical manufacturing sites here and a well-developed supply chain of supporting industries. Expertise in the region is diverse with the chemical industry making products for a wide range of end uses. This includes everything from paper production and plastics to cosmetics and agricultural products.
